The Reinvention of Cake

So how are you feeling? For real, I really want to know before I get into my diatribe. Everyone has a story, and I am not sure my story is any more interesting than yours. But I am willing to share. I go by Berry Michel. No, that’s not my real name, but it serves the purpose. I’m a 47-year-old African American male that has been divorced twice and believe it or not I’m an Army officer that has served my country for almost 26 years. You probably guessed it by now, it’s time for me to move on from the Army. Don’t get me wrong, being in the Army has been a great experience and I owe a lot to Uncle Sam, but may I be blunt, I’m ready get off this ride.
So, what does an ex-Army officer do in retirement? Go work for the government as a civilian, become a contractor for the defense industry, or do some other meaningless job that keeps me comfortable yet unfilled. Not interested. So, me in my infinite wisdom decided to embark on a writing career. It’s my passion. No, it probably doesn’t pay well, but you are welcome to follow me on my journey to remake myself in my late 40’s. If it’s as eventful as the last couple of decades, it should be a hilarious journey.
See my life has been dominated by cake. Yes cake, not the kind you eat though. You know the saying, “you want your cake and eat it too.” Well, that’s me. I’ve never been quite satisfied with my life. I’m always reaching for something better before smelling the roses and realizing what I have is probably enough, wait, more than enough, and way better than what a lot of other people have. I’m restless by nature and that has led me down some dark rabbit holes from chasing women, drinking too much, and just plain male stupidity. Hence the two divorces.
In short, I am as far from being a perfect person as one can get. But I was once told that broken people have the best stories and maybe a little wisdom on what not to do. That is what the “Reinvention of Cake” blog is about. Some of the stories I will share are hilarious, but they run the spectrum of human emotion from joy to pain, and from hurt to healing. I know I’m not the only one that has some scar tissue from bad decisions they made. So, let’s talk. There’s no shame here. We all deserve a second chance to remake ourselves. Every day we wake, we are given a chance to do something different to break our old patterns. I’m not sure life was ever meant to be easy. What’s the fun in that anyway? Let your journey be mistake filled but fueled by self-discovery and growth. Let’s take this ride together and welcome to “The Reinvention of Cake.”
